Dylan’s Desk: “Tech journalist” doesn’t have to be an oxymoron | VentureBeat

The tech business deserves a better press corps.

By “better,” I don’t mean “friendlier.” I mean journalists and bloggers that treat technology with the same serious and critical eye that is (or should be) afforded to presidential candidates and Fortune 500 companies.

The tech industry and the entrepreneurs behind it are busy rebuilding our world, in profound and often unanticipated ways. The impact of the technologies we use today will have far-reaching consequences. Google, Facebook, and Apple are massive profit-making (and job-creating) businesses, but they’re also changing the way we live our lives, interact with each other, express ourselves, and think about the world.

How Google’s +1 Button Affects SEO

The plot thickened last month when Google launched Search plus Your World. Jack Menzel, director of product management for Google Search, explained that now Google+ users would be able to “search across information that is private and only shared to you, not just the public web.” According to Ian Lurie from the blog Conversation Marketing, in Search plus Your World, search results that received a lot of +1s tend to show up higher in results.

Google has come out and described the purpose of a +1, but hasn’t necessarily explained the direct effect a +1 has on search ranking. Here’s a breakdown of what we currently know.

How NOT to do public relations: An interview with Peter Shankman – Forbes

Peter Shankman is known for many things: skydiving, social media chops, public speaking, and a wry and brazen wit. What’s important to remember about Shankman is that he is a public relations professional at his core, and prior to his serial entrepreneurship he was a hard-at-work flack. There’s no shame in this, and as a matter of fact if done right, public relations can be a glorious job. Unfortunately, it’s often done wrong more than it’s done right.

Yandex, Google’s Russian Rival, Is Twitter’s New Real-Time Search Partner | TechCrunch

The Yandex agreement is similar to the real-time Twitter search that used to be offered by Google — a partnership that ended last year around the time that Google was launching its own Google+ service.

Yandex says it has licensed the “full feed of all public tweets,” covering all languages — but seems to highlight specifically those tweets that are in Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian or Kazakh, covering tweets from more than two million users. People will be able to search by usernames and hashtags, too. In total, Twitter has around 100 million active users, covering some 250 million tweets per day.

The Challenges of Cross-Channel Data Integration – eMarketer

Increased consumer demand for more personalized and relevant brand experiences has made customer segmentation and targeting an imperative for companies.According to a November 2011 survey from Acxiom and DIGIDAY, though the majority of US advertisers and agencies were able to identify and segment their customer base, few were capable of doing so in a way that delivers a personalized experience in real time and across multiple channels.More than half 58% of advertisers and 39% of agencies said they were able to track and segment their best customers. However, agencies were more than twice as likely 12% to be able to incorporate both online and offline data into the segmentation process, compared to just 5% of advertisers capable of this more advanced approach.

Geek to Live: How to deal with Internet Meanies

There’s something about the feeling of anonymity on the Internet that can turn otherwise reasonable, pleasant people into complete blockheads. Given an open, free, global network to communicate, people use it to rant, rave, flame and complain. We’ve all done it.

But when YOU are the target of an insulting post or sharply-worded email, quite frankly, it can really suck. Today I’ve got some strategies for dealing with Internet Meanies: those faceless virtual bullies who take pleasure in shooting other people down from the safety of their keyboards.
