How to find the number of website related to a specific topic

Monica Li from the Hong Kong office asked the following question to the global social media team alias via email :

Turner Regional Head of Interactive Media just asked me:

If you wanted to measure how many websites are dedicated to Tom and Jerry in the world, how would you go about doing it?

My suggestions:

· Check Technorati to see what’s tagged Tom and Jerry

· Go to Tom and Jerry fan site and see links

· Do a Facebook fan page search for Tom and Jerry

Can you think of others?

The discussion was quite interesting – therefore, here is the compilation of all answers around here :

David Lian’s answer

Do a Google Search.

There may be another option, depending on how well you are connected in social media to the relevant people: Ask your community, for example on Twitter. Or engage in relevant forums / Facebook fan pages and ask there.

Jeremy Woolf’s answer

Will need to filter and separate sites that mention versus sites that are devoted to the famously barbaric mouse and cat, but one way is using the following tools…

Addictomatic:

Social Mention:

Kimmo’s comment

”in the world” means that you also look for “Tom ja Jerry” (Finnish), ”Tom och Jerry” (Swedish), etc…

In other words, what every number you get, it’s too low.

And to finish, my contribution, focusing more about finding websites rather than conversations

My answer : about 360 in the world.

Here is my tip of the day – I would not advice to go through social media channel to find websites about a specific topic, but go through old school search. To find how many website are dedicated to Tom and Jerry, I would start from Google (as David mentioned) with some filter to avoid to pick all websites simply mentioning Tom & Jerry (but who are not dedicated).

Here is the google query I would recommend : allintitle: tom jerry website

Some explanations :

Filter I recommend : look at the following keywords : “tom”, “jerry”, “website” (to be sure that we’ll target mainly websites, and not all the pages)

Second filter : look at those keywords, but only in the websites.

Or in the Advanced Search interface :

You’ll find about 360 websites in the world having Tom and Jerry in their titles …

And you, what would be your secret trick to answer that question ?
