Want to Print Facebook? Better Get 11.5 Billion Sheets of Paper

Printing a year’s worth of Facebook statuses would be equivalent to printing more than 500 million Oxford English Dictionaries, a new survey found.

Sure, it would be a waste of paper, but a UK online cartridge retailer thought it would be interesting to find out how much paper would be needed to print a year’s worth of Facebook statuses if the website’s 800 million users updated once per day. The answer — 11.5 billion sheets.

Of course, there are a few stipulations for cramming the statuses onto paper — each of the estimated 292 billion status updates would be an average of two lines, which is equivalent to 584 billion total lines; the statuses would be printed on 8.3-by-11.7 inch paper in size 11 point Arial font.

Facebook-Based Loyalty Program to be Tested by Major Chains

Taco Bell, Dunkin’ Donuts, Quiznos, and Red Robin want to see if consumers’ love of social gaming can be converted into commerce at their stores nationwide. They’ve penned deals with Plink, a loyalty marketing start-up that’s set to announce its quick-serve brand test partners on Thursday. It’s pretty simple: the more Plink users spend at the restaurants, the more Facebook Credits they’ll earn to play games like FarmVille, CityVille, and The Sims.

Facebook isn’t just the largest social networking site on the web with more than 800 million active users; it also collects a massive amount of information about those users. Through the newly revamped Facebook Insights, Page owners can access a staggering amount of information about their fans’ activities. This information gives business owners valuable insight into what they need to do to give fans a better experience and, in turn, achieve better marketing results.

The Average Performance of 4,000 Facebook Pages

I teamed up with the folks from EdgeRank Checker to examine what was going on, and the findings were disturbing.

First, we found that (in a review of 4,000 Facebook pages) the average page post is only reaching 17 percent of the page’s fans.

Your mileage may vary, so do your own calculations — look at your page insights, average the reach of the last ten posts, and divide that by your total fan count.

Most Consumers Still Don’t Talk About Brands on Social Sites

While most marketers leverage Facebook and Twitter to communicate with customers, not nearly as many consumers comment about these companies and brands on the social sites.

AYTM Market Research found that 57.8% of US Facebook users had not mentioned a brand in their status updates as of October 2011. More heartening for marketers is that just 0.5% of Facebook users posted only negative mentions about brands on Facebook. More often, they reported commenting on brands in a positive way (25.3%) or with a mix of both positive and negative mentions (16.4%).

14% Of People Have Created Facebook Accounts For Their Dog

Social media inspires the sublime to the utterly ridiculous, and the latest trend that emerging on Facebook is just utterly ridiculous. A study by eBay (of all institutions), has revealed that people the world over are taking to social networking sites and setting up profile for their pets.

The usual suspects of course get the mass of these profiles and Facebook alone gets a huge number of profiles. According to the study, around 14% of Facebook users maintain a Facebook page for their pets (mainly dogs). But what’s even more hilarious is the fact that 42% of these dogs have between 1 – 25 friends. Another 20% have between 50 – 100 friends. The question I suppose is ‘who on earth befriends a dog on Facebook? Other dogs?
